Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Overview

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) is one of the first and most competitive engineering departments at the Isfahan University of Technology (IUT), established in 1977. This department offers a broad range of high-quality undergraduate and graduate education programs, and conducts research in many challenging fields in electrical and computer engineering.

Electrical and computer engineering is a crucial part of almost every modern system and technology. The primary mission of the ECE department is to provide its bright and diligent students with top quality and modern academic education within the electrical and computer engineering and technology domain. Another important mission of the department is to perform high-quality theoretical and applied research to advance the state-of-the-art technology solutions. Such research aims to support the high-tech industry in the region and to contribute to the global advancement of technology in related domains. All scientific staff, undergraduate, and graduate students work hard together to achieve these objectives, and to keep the ECE department recognized as a leading institute nation-wide and internationally.

The scientific activities at the ECE department are led by internationally recognized faculty members in various majors of electrical and computer engineering. These faculty members are diverse in the sense of their academic rank, specialized field. Currently, about 74 faculty members serving the education and research responsibilities at the ECE department. The department also actively hires post-doctoral fellows to efficiently extend and support the associated research activities.

At ECE, especial attention is given to the undergraduate program, since the university is nationally/internationally well-known for its high-quality undergraduate programs and students. Over 900 students are currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) level at the ECE department in 4 majors of electrical engineering (i.e., communication, control, electronics, and power engineering) as well as 3 majors of computer engineering (i.e., computer architecture, software engineering, and information technology). They are at the top 1% of the participants at the National University Entrance Exam. In addition to a deep understanding of various theoretical aspects of electrical and computer engineering, the undergraduate programs also address experimental aspects of the real-world engineering challenges. Currently, 40 educational laboratories at the ECE department support the educational efforts of the department. The laboratories are led by the academic staff of the department and equipped with up-to-date facilities.

Research Activities

  • The ECE department currently manages over 600 graduate students in a broad range of majors, including:

    • Communication systems
    • Communication networks
    • Electromagnetic fields and waves
    • Electronics
    • Power electronics
    • Power systems
    • Electric machines and drives
    • Control
    • Computer architecture
    • Computer software
    • Artificial intelligence
  • The Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Master of Engineering (M.Eng) programs are typically two-year programs for which the applicants are supposed to take the associated national entrance exam. However, every year, the department welcomes the top 10% of the B.Sc. graduates to its M.Sc. program. The admission into the prestigious four-year Ph.D. program is similar but needs evidence of research capabilities as well. In this program, the department is currently serving 200 Ph.D. students who are conducting research toward their thesis. This research is usually carried out in the research groups that are coordinated by post-doctoral fellows, and led by the faculty members.
There are several research fields in the domain of electrical and computer engineering. The ECE department has extensive expertise, research teams, and high-tech facilities that enable cutting edge and high-quality research in many of those fields. The following is a list of topics that are under active research and investigation in the ECE department.

    • Control and Industrial Automation
    • Advanced Control Lab.
    • Robotics
    • Power Electronics and Electric Drives
    • Switching Power Supply
    • Microelectronics
    • Photonics
    • Statistical and Array Signal Processing
    • Microwave and Antenna
    • Cryptography and System Security
    • Wired/Wireless Networking and Network Security
    • Digital Communication and Signal Processing (DSP)
    • Image and Video Processing
    • Information theory and coding
    • Big Data, Data Mining, and Bioinformatics
    • Software Engineering and Formal Methods
    • Artificial Intelligence, Pattern Analysis, and Machine learning
    • Real-Time Dependable Networked Embedded Systems
    • Wireless Sensor Networks and Internet-of-Things

Industrial Partners

The ECE department has worked closely with national industries ever since it was established in 1977. Making engineering knowledge accessible to the industry has been considered as an important task in the ECE department. This task is fulfilled by training skillful and knowledgeable electrical and computer engineers as well as various industrial collaborations to support the needs of companies for high-tech solutions and systems. At the same time, the industrial partners participate in practical education by making it possible for the students of the ECE department to acquire practical experiences at the site through internship opportunities and graduate projects. In recent years, the ECE department has had several agreements and collaborations with leading companies such as Mobarakeh steel co., Isfahan steel co., Isfahan regional electric co., Niroo research institute (NRI), information and telecommunication research center (ITRC), telecommunication infrastructure company (TIC) of Iran ministry of ICT, and Isfahan urban railway organization, just to name a few.

International Collaboration

International collaborations are one of the keys to achieving the mission of the ECE department. Therefore, establishing and extending such collaborations are actively chased and appreciated in the department. Faculty members, graduate, and undergraduate students are involved in international cooperation in different ways. Every year, several faculty members pay scientific visits to top universities in the world to extend their international network. Furthermore, the department provides Ph.D. students with facilities to spend their sabbatical at the top universities in the world. The joint research projects can be considered as another aspect of the international collaborations of the department. Also, frequent invited talks by the pioneers in various relevant fields are organized in the ECE department. The role of the students can be further highlighted by noting the active representations of student branches of international institutes/associations related to electrical and computer engineering such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
