Department of Mathematical Sciences

Overview

The current department of mathematical sciences was formed in 1976 as a part of the faculty of sciences and continued its activities as an independent department since 1982, initially offering only B.Sc. degrees in mathematics. Currently the department offers B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in various disciplines as diverse as pure and applied mathematics, as well as pure and applied statistics. More than 60 Ph.D. students have been graduated during the last decade who now pursuit their academic career as faculty members in different universities in Iran. As of Oct. 2015, the department has 39 faculty members including 5 full professors, 15 associate professors and 19 assistant professors, as well as 250 undergraduate students, 250 master students and 100 Ph.D. students in different disciplines of pure and applied mathematics.

Research

The department has research activities in various disciplines of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics, named as Algebra (Group and Ring), Analysis Functional, Geometric, Harmonic, Numerical and Stochastical), Coding, Combinatorics, Cryptography and Information Theory, Differential Equations (Ordinary and Partial), Dynamical Systems (Continuous and Discrete), Geometry (Algebraic, Computational, Differential and Finite), Mathematical Logic and Model Theory, Mathematical Education, Number Theory, Operator Theory, Optimization, Probability, Statistics and Topology. The department has welcomed the postdocs specializing in diverse mathematical fields in the recent years in order to expand its research activities. Three postdocs in algebra, combinatorics and harmonic analysis are expected to join the department this year. The faculty, postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students all contribute to the active research community in IUT math.

Industrial and academic collaborations

The department has strong connections with industry and other external partners. Our collaborations include research projects to deal with organizational challenges. The department has active cooperative projects with some industrial companies. The faculty members have always been active and influential in academic societies such as Iranian mathematical society (IMS) and Iranian Statistical Society (ISS). One of our colleagues is now serving as a member of board of directors of IMS.

Honors and Awards

Faculty:

Our award site describes the international and national research prizes awarded to our faculty. . Included are Paul Erdos award of the world Federation of national mathematics competitions (2006). Since 2010, five of the IMS research prizes (1 Behzad prize, 2 Riazi Kermani prizes, 1 Hashtroodi prize), the young mathematician prize of the IPM school of mathematics (2009) and Abureyhan award of Iranian Academy of Sciences for young mathematician (2015) have been granted to our colleagues. In 2015 the department also have been granted the sole national mathematics grant by Iran National Science Foundation (INSF), for its project in "Fourier analysis and its applications".

Students:

IUT undergraduates are top performers at national competitions held annually by the IMS and ISS among representatives of all universities in Iran. Since 2013, the department's mathematics team has ranked the second place among more than thirty teams nationwide. Also the department's statistic team ranked 1st nationally in 2013-2014 and ranked third in 2015. Additionally our mathematics team has won 1 gold medal, 2 silver medals, 8 bronze medals and several honorable mentions in international mathematics competitions (IMC 2006-IMC 2015). Also some members of our statistic team won the gold medals of international statistical Olympiad for undergraduate students for three consecutive years (2013-2015) as members of statistics national team.

Department is very active in organizing national and international conferences as well as summer school and workshops. More recently, in Sep. 2015, the international summer school in tilling and tessellation was held in the department jointly with CIMPA (France). Next year in July 2016, the thirteen international seminar on differential equations and dynamical systems (DEDS13) is scheduled to be held in IUT.

Academic Programs

The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers the degrees of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Pure Mathematics, Industrial Mathematics, and Statistics. At the graduate level, it offers the Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Ph.D. in Pure and Applied Mathematics and Pure and Applied Statistics.

Undergraduate students must take 20 credits in general courses, 61, 61 and 30 credits in basic courses, 36, 39 and 76 credits in core courses and 15, 15 and 6 credits in elective courses (total 132, 135, 132 credits) to obtain B.Sc. in Pure Mathematics, Industrial Mathematics and Statistics, respectively.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers the degrees of Master of Science (M.Sc.) and the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics and Applied Statistics. It has more than 200 M.Sc. students and more than 50 Ph.D. students in about 20 fields of study in Mathematical Sciences.

M.Sc. Program: M.Sc. students must take 12 credits in their field of study from Table 1, and 8 credits in his or her required courses from Table 2, Seminar (2 credits) and Thesis (6 credits), totally 28 credits to obtain M.Sc. degree.

Ph.D. Program: Ph.D. students according to their field of study should take 16 credits from graduate courses (at least two courses in their field of study and one course in another field). After passing the education comprehensive exam, they will take a 20 credits research project and will start their research period. After six months, they must pass the research comprehensive exam, and then continue their works to complete their PhD Thesis in Mathematics.
